Larry Beer was elected November 1, 2005, to a four year term on the Aurora (Colorado) City Council. His mission is to improve opportunity, security and quality of life for the people of Aurora, and to protect the integrity and character of Aurora’s neighborhoods.

Larry represents Ward III in west-central Aurora.  His 2007 committee assignments are: Water (chair), Operations and Environmental Affairs, and Planning, Economic Development & Redevelopment.

Larry’s background in business and community service prepared him to be an effective leader on the City Council of America’s 59th largest city.

He served as a member of the Aurora Planning and Zoning Commission from 2002-2004, and also has served as a member of Aurora’s Citizen Utilities Advisory Budget Committee and the Citizens’ Advisory Budget Committee for Arapahoe County.

Larry was appointed by Governor Roy Romer to the Colorado Utility Consumers' Board, which advises the Colorado Public Utilities Commission on consumer issues related to energy and telecommunications.  From 1999 to 2002, he served on the Board of Directors of the Mental Health Corporation of Denver. He was appointed to serve as President of MHCD’s affiliated low income housing corporation, Sabin Group Inc.

Larry is employed as Managing Director of The Montview Companies, a real estate investment firm, and as a consultant specializing in site acquisition, land use planning, and project management for corporate real estate clients with projects throughout the United States. Before starting this business, he managed the Denver Area Educational Telecommunications Consortium, a non-profit provider of instructional television programming for the K-12 classroom.  From 1977 to 1991, he was a newspaper advertising executive, trade association manager and broadcaster. He is a member of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce, the Aurora Association of Realtors, the Denver Metro Commercial Association of Realtors, and the Urban Land Institute.

Larry, 47, is a licensed real estate broker, and received a B.A. in economics from the University of Colorado in 1994 which he earned as a working adult and full-time night student.  He is a member of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce, the Aurora Association of Realtors, the Denver Metro Commercial Association of Realtors, and the Urban Land Institute.  Larry works and plays well with people of all political persuasions, but admits he served three terms as Treasurer of the Colorado Democratic Party (1997-2003), represented Colorado as a delegate to the 1996 and 2000 Democratic National Conventions, and was president of the Colorado Young Democrats in 1985-86.  He has been a member of the central and executive committees of the Colorado Democratic Party for many years.

As Treasurer – a volunteer position elected by the party’s state central committee – he served as chief financial officer of a $10 million (annual) organization; his responsibilities included budget, financial management, a/p and a/r, banking relationships and human resources (including preparation of a biweekly payroll for 105 employees), and management of 12 separate political committees, responsible for highly complex state and federal campaign finance compliance and reporting.  For 2006-08, he is serving as Treasurer of the Democratic Municipal Officials Conference, a nationwide organization of mayors and city council members which is a constituency group of the Democratic National Committee.

Larry first moved to what is now Ward III in 1981.  Today, he lives in Aurora’s Park East neighborhood and belongs to the Highland Park East Neighborhood Association.  He is married to Karen Middleton, who represents Aurora on Colorado’s State Board of Education, and has two daughters, Molly (13) and Katie (10).
